GrapesThe Friends of Market Street Chapel was organized to restore the oldest church in Spencer, West Virginia. The old chapel sits forlornly in the middle of the 400 block of Market Street, looking as discarded and neglected as the timeworn memories shielded within its four walls. Julie Evans-Boggs organized the group after hearing God's call to restore the church.

The history of the church is recorded in William H. Bishop's History of Roane County. The Presbyterian church has been organized by a visiting preacher in 1874. The present brick structure was erected in 1907. The bell came from the old structure and had been a gift from some Philadelphia families. "No church bell in the city had such sweetly inviting tones," says Bishop. Its four memorial windows of leaded glass were also gifts. The stained glass windows and the bell had been removed from the church but have been located and will be returned to their place in the church. The restoration project is funded through donations and fundraisers organized by the group.

The Roane County Reporter published an article on the chapel's progress on March 28, 2014.
